Evaluation Form

Freestyle Repertory Theatre is dedicated to the art of improvisation. With an emphasis on collaboration, creative risk-taking and imaginative storytelling, this program draws the audience in to become an active, integral part of the performance.

This New York-based improvisational troupe of classically trained actors uses teamwork, ideas from the audience and audience volunteers to create unbelievably imaginative on-the-spot scenes.

Live theatre’s partnership of audience and actor creates the fun and thrill of TheatreSports™

An interactive theatre assembly

Be it 50 people at a Saturday evening coffee house in a no holds barred contest or 300 kids in a public school gym-natorium , skillfully guided by challenges of teamwork, literary styles, historical periods, Freestyle Rep’s improvisers use the audience’s suggestions and “yeah… come on up” participation in completely spontaneous and wildly unpredictable, live, onstage performance.

Since 1980 Freestyle Rep has performed their theatrical improvisation throughout the off and off off Broadway theatres of New York City and the schools of the tri state New Jersey, Connecticut, New York area.

Workshops and Residencies

In our improvisational theatre workshops and residencies, Freestyle Rep artists use principles of theatrical improvisation to build students' personal confidence, group skills, and awareness of what goes in to making a piece of theatre. Two teaching artists lead students through improvisations, exploring the creation of characters, settings and stories. Because the two rules of the workshop are, "Always say yes," and "Always make your partner look good," students learn that creating theatre involves accepting and using any idea given, and find themselves free to create, express and reflect on the work. The program develops the critical skills necessary for acting, directing, play-writing and attentive, responsive audience involvement.

Teen Edition

The Teen Edition is a theatrical Improvisation Competition between self-created teams of high school students from New York and surrounding areas. Students will take the stage and perform in front of a live audience in the spring.

"Freestyle Rep was back for the second year for our students-they are amazingly talented and kept both students and teachers engaged for the entire program. The artists worked with different genres of literature, setting and with different authors with their cooperative story building done on the spot. Our assistant principal was impressed with how the performance included curriculum, touching on similes, metaphors, setting, character and periods of history. This program is now a tradition for our school!"
Dorina Leslie-Huckeberry Hill School

"These players are more than ready for the game, and give the audience an experience that confirms that improv delivers far more than we ever would expect. "
