Novel Ideas is an educational theater troupe that uses improvisation to educate, excite and inspire creative writing. With lots of audience participation, props and costumes, Novel Ideas’ players dramatize children’s thoughts, ideas and even original writings.

Founded by Mike Shreeman, an actor/improvisor and the son of two educators, Novel Ideas combines improvisation and education to inspire young authors. Using a unique brand of audience participation, trained actors demonstrate the basic elements of creative writing. Novel Ideas has been performing in schools throughout the Midwest for over two decades and is the highlight for many schools year after year.

Novel Ideas excites and inspires young authors about writing. These shows encourage creative problem solving and often open the door to rarely discussed topics.

Premier Show

The Premier show introduces students to each of the four basic elements of creative writing: Character, Location, Activity and Plot. Using improvisation and audience suggestions, this performance explores and enhances each element individually. After the students have mastered these elements, they are then combined and performed (with volunteer actors!) to show how easy and fun it is to create your own original story.

Encore Show

The Encore show rewards young authors by performing their stories in front of their peers. Four to five of your students' stories are selected and performed (with even more volunteer actors!). Using a wide range of styles such as Opera, Silent Movie and Foreign Film enables even the most basic of stories to be highly entertaining for the whole audience.

“Novel Ideas was exceptional! Thank you!"

J. Taylor, Principal
Lincoln Elementary School
Port Washington, WI

“The students truly enjoyed seeing their stories ‘come to life.’ It’s a great motivation for the students to write stories knowing their story may be performed. The actors were very professional, highly energetic and just what we needed.”

Sue Kuligoski, Assistant Principal
Meadow Ridge School
Orland Park, IL
